RTI to check status of state scholarship application
Filed for Maharashtra Mahadbt scholarship in October. Status still 'under verification'. Can I file RTI to know what's pending?
Know the practical answer?

3 repliesYes, RTI here is very effective because scholarship delays are usually administrative neglect rather than rejection. File to the Social Welfare / Tribal Welfare Department depending on which scheme.
Ask: 1. Current status of application no. X (with screenshots) 2. Stage at which verification is pending + name + designation of officer 3. Average processing time for applications received in same batch 4. Number of applications from your batch already disbursed vs pending

Question #4 makes officers very uncomfortable when their batch has high pending count. Usually triggers fast action.
The broader 'using RTI to unstick benefit applications' chapter is Ch 11 in The RTI Playbook.
Mahadbt specifically — also check on mahadbt.maharashtra.gov.in if there's an 'objection raised' tag. Sometimes the objection is raised but mail doesn't reach you. Once you respond to the objection, status moves quickly.
Used RTI for Rajasthan SC/ST scholarship last year — got reply in 14 days saying my application was at 'principal verification' stuck for 4 months. Forwarded the RTI reply to the principal, scholarship disbursed within 3 weeks.
