I applied for a vehicle registration at the RTO, but my file is not moving. I want to know the reason for the delay. Can I file an RTI to know the status of my file?

Know the practical answer?

You can file an RTI application under §6(1) of the RTI Act 2005 to the RTO, asking for the current status of your file and the reason for the delay.

Before filing an RTI, try to contact the RTO and ask for the status of your file. They may provide you with an update.

The RTO may deny the information under §8(1)(j) of the RTI Act 2005, citing that the information is personal in nature. But you can still try to file an RTI.

As per the R.K. Jain 2013 case, you have the right to know the status of your file and the reason for the delay. File an RTI application and ask for the status, and also ask for the timeline for the completion of the process.
