I applied for a home loan from SBI last month but it got rejected. I want to know the reason for rejection. Can I file an RTI to know the reason? If yes, what information should I provide in the RTI application? Should I file it to SBI or to RBI? Please help.

As per the Jayantilal Mistry SC ruling, banks are required to provide reasons for loan rejection. So, you can file an RTI to SBI, citing this ruling, and ask for the reasons for loan rejection. Also, mention that you want to know the criteria used for loan rejection.

Yes, you can file an RTI to know the reason for loan rejection. According to §6(1) of the RTI Act, you can file an application to the PIO of SBI, asking for the reasons for loan rejection. You should provide your loan application number and other relevant details in the RTI application.

You should file the RTI to SBI, as they are the ones who rejected your loan application. RBI is the regulator, but SBI is the respondent in this case. Make sure to mention the loan application number and the date of rejection in the RTI application.

Before filing an RTI, you can try to get the information from the bank directly. Sometimes, banks provide the reasons for loan rejection if you ask them. If they don't provide the information, then you can file an RTI to SBI, as suggested by the other members.
